TROILUS AND CRESSIDA : direct from the RSC

Start Date: Wednesday 14 Nov 2018 End Date: Wednesday 14 Nov 2018
Time: 7pm
Venue: THEATRE AT THE MILL

THIS IS A SCREENING FROM ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

"Lechery, lechery, still wars and lechery: nothing else holds fashion"

Troilus and Cressida swear they will always be true to one another. But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences.

Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical futuristic vision of a world resounding with the rhythm of battle, broadcast live to cinemas from Shakespeare's home town.

The Greek army is encamped under the walls of Troy and, at the point at which the play begins, the war has reached stalemate. The Greeks are quarrelling amongst themselves. Achilles, their greatest champion, refuses to fight and has withdrawn to his tent with his lover, Patroclus. Equally at odds with themselves, the Trojans are debating the value of continuing the war merely for the sake of keeping Helen.

Troilus is much distracted from these military concerns by his love for Cressida, the daughter of a Trojan who has defected to the Greek camp. The young lovers are eagerly assisted by Cressida's uncle Pandarus, who acts as their go-between. However, after only one night together they are parted when Cressida is sent to join her father in the Greek camp. Almost immediately she betrays Troilus with the Greek Diomedes and, discovering this, Troilus is plunged into despair.

With the fall of Troy certain, Troilus vows revenge on Achilles.

SHACKLETON'S CARPENTER

Start Date: Wednesday 31 Oct 2018 End Date: Wednesday 31 Oct 2018
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: THE OLD COURTHOUSE

Shackleton's Carpenter, Harry McNish, was the only man who challenged The Boss on the ice floes of Antarctica. Shackleton's Endurance sank in Antarctica, leaving him and his crew of 27 stranded. McNish, brilliant carpenter and shipwright, defied Shackleton, but went all the way with him and played an absolutely vital role in ensuring all 28 were saved. For all his bravery and ingenuity, McNish was one of the very few who were never awarded the Polar Medal. Now again, alone and destitute, one still night on the dockside, he challenges him one last time. In his fevered mind he relives the Endurance expedition, pitting himself against Shackleton and plagued by the ghosts of his past. How did he antagonise the hero of Antarctica? How does he come to terms with it?

Thunderous applause for a very powerful, clever, elegantly constructed play. Getting one character to create several others on stage is no easy task, but Louw's writing & Rennie's performance made the illusion really believable. 4* Fringe review online.

THREE'S A SHROUD

Time: 7.45pm
Venue: THEATRE AT THE MILL

RIVAL UNDERTAKERS DISTURB THE PEACE IN BELFAST…AGAIN.

Three’s A Shroud – The Smash Hit Comedy by Stephen Large

Following on from last year’s sell out run in the Belfast, Waterfront, Stephen Larges, Three’s A Shroud makes a comeback. For generations, Catholic undertakers in Belfast have buried Catholics and Protestant undertakers have buried Protestants. So you’d think now that we have peace (mostly), we could stick to these rules? But no.

When veteran undertaker, Gerry McSorely, finds his Catholic customers being stolen by young Protestant rival, Basil Gray, an undertaking war breaks out. It gets worse when young Polish woman, Irena Bukowski’s cut-price, new-age, interdenominational funeral home usurps them both.

Joined by a host of outrageous characters including; The hilarious cleaner Mrs Johnston, Paramilitary leader Graham Stitt (who gives a must-see eulogy for his DA – Gusty), Gerry McSorely and Simon the struggling undertaking apprentice.

Three’s A Shroud is loosely based on a true story.

Written by Stephen Large, Founder of the satirical Facebook page 'Dundonald Liberation Army’, Stephen has amassed 30,000 online followers in the year since its inception.

Directed by Martin Lynch and produced by GBL Productions. Three’s A Shroud is brought to life by a fabulous cast headed up by veteran actor, BJ Hogg as Gerry McSorely. Whilst most fondly remembered by many as ‘Big Mervyn’ in the popular TV series, Give My Head Peace. Matthew McElhinney as Simon, Shaun Blaney as Basil Gray and brilliant Nuala McGowan as Irena Bukowski.

Irish News – “This undoubtedly was a hilarious night out”

Belfast Telegraph – “Graham Stitt's eulogy for his Da - Gusty - was something special both in delivery and content."
